An extremely eclectic mix of rare and collectible books in a variety of subjects and areas. An outstanding highlight is the very rare third volume of the 1738 third edition of Jonathan Swift’s “Gulliver’s Travels,” considered the best edition of the book. Included in the sale is a unique journal of handwritten letter “one-off’s” (1884-1887) that help document the beginnings of the American Federation of Labor. A first edition of the book credited with beginning the Platinum Age of Comic Books, Palmer Cox’s “The Brownies: Their Book,” is up for auction, as well as a number of early and original Japanese woodblock books. Rounding out the sale are a rare, signed first edition of a Zane Grey title, early travels in America, numerous Civil War books and a signed and hand-illumined book by Elbert Hubbard (a special, limited edition with several original watercolor sketches within its decorative pages). From the Arts & Crafts era we have a very scarce and original furniture catalog from the Levin Bros. Furniture Company and two first edition examples of books on William Morris. Finally, a very scarce and lovely signed example of the true first edition of James Malone’s important “The Chickasaw Nation,” is included. H. G. Wells’ scarce, limited edition of “Door in the Wall” is in the auction—it’s the rare 1/300 version with ten photogravures instead of just one. Additionally, there are first editions by Dickens, Washington Irving, Kurt Vonnegut and Theodore Dreiser, to name a few.
