GEORGE W. DE LONG DESCENDANTS ESTATE

Westport Auction is pleased to present the sale of rare historic items from the descendants of Lt. Commander George Washington De Long of the ill fated Jeannette arctic expedition. Included among the collection of personal effects and family items is the rare gold medal minted and presented posthumously to the family of De Long. Estimated at $20,000 - $30,000 the extremely rare medal is one of only 8 minted for the families of the deceased. Under the command of Lt. Commander George Washington De Long, the Jeannette, a former British Navy gun vessel, left San Francisco on July 8, 1879, but became trapped in pack-ice off Herald Island. The crew abandoned the ship and split into three groups in search of the mainland. Of the 25 crew members, 13 survived the ordeal. De Long was among those who did not survive. The sale will be held at 10 AM, Sunday, February 24th. Contact Westport Auction at 203-222-3448 or info@westportauction.com for further details.
