Ellis Family Estate Online Only Auction, 5/18
The articles in this sale come from an historical family estate on Shaw Island in the San Juan Islands of Washington State. The property was originally homesteaded in the 1880s by Norwegian immigrant Theodore Tharald, whose name remains associated with its listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
Robert and Blanche Ellis bought the property in 1936. Over the next 70+ years, the Ellis family made a concerted effort to preserve the historic character of the original Tharald Homestead. It was most recently occupied by Robert and Blanche?s son, Fred E. Ellis, his wife Marilyn, and their children, until Fred?s death in 2010.
The Ellis family donated the estate to the San Juan Preservation Trust in 2017. Now known as the Ellis Family Preserve, the property includes the original home, outbuildings, and 340 acres of woodland, open pastures, and marine coastline on the pristine shores of the Salish Sea.
All proceeds from this sale, which consists of articles accumulated by the extended Ellis family over more than a century, will go to support the ongoing stewardship costs of conserving the natural beauty and historic character of the Ellis Family Preserve in perpetuity. The San Juan Preservation Trust is a private, 501(c)(3) nonprofit land trust that permanently protects more than 18,000 acres in the San Juan Islands. More information about the Ellis Family Preserve and the San Juan Preservation Trust may be found at sjpt.org.
