This catalog presents a select arrangement of rare, antique and decorative books. Featured is a desirable library of Charles Dickens first editions in privately commissioned deluxe fancy leather 19th century bindings. We will also present our next session from an interesting private estate library belonging to an Eastern Orthodox priest. Antique and rare books are numerous in this catalog. Among the earliest examples are the 1791 first edition of Robertson?s ?Historical Disquisition Concerning the Knowledge Which the Ancients Had of India,? including both copperplate engraved maps, 1792 issues of ?The Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure,? including numerous engraved folding maps, and the rare 1859 first edition of Herbert?s ?Hints to Horse-Keepers.? Additional desirable finds include the rare 1886 elephant folio of ?Bradley?s Atlas of the World for Commercial and Library Reference,? first edition volumes of Kingsbury?s 17th century colonial America history, ?Records of the Virginia Company of London,? and an author-signed copy of the first edition of Armstrong?s ?A Visit to Egypt in 1872.? Leading the private collections in this auction are the Charles Dickens titles. The books are uniformly bound in rich crimson fancy leather bindings with gilt lettering and appear to have been prepared around 1890. Most of the books contain a bookplate belonging to Julius Franke (1868-1936), who was a prominent New York City architect whose works included the Wurlitzer Building, and it seems likely that he commissioned the bindings. The titles range from Dickens? earliest published works and include a great many first editions in their first states. Classics such as ?Tale of Two Cities,? ?Oliver Twist? and ?David Copperfield? are present, among dozens of others. Found throughout this catalog are additional decorative antique bindings and compelling selections along with a private collection of vintage science fiction pulp magazines with signature, lurid covers.
