Treadway's September 15th auction contains two sessions. Session one is 20th Century Art + Design and features multiple collections of American ceramics from Pennsylvania, Texas, Chicago and Ohio, ranging from Rookwood, Newcomb College, Van Briggle, George Ohr, Marblehead, Grueby, and more. A Southern collection contains Tiffany lamps and metalwork that were featured in numerous museum exhibitions. This collection features a very rare Autumn Leaf ball lamp from The Garden Museum Collection in Tokyo, Japan. English arts and crafts silver, clocks and ceramics come from an extensive collection in New York state, featuring two monumental Archibald Knox garden ceramic pieces. Paintings include a Thomas Hart Benton from a Kansas collector and a Gertrude Abercrombie out of a Michigan home.
The African American Art, session two of the auction includes not only important individual works, but also an amazing representation of a great number of unique artists, and examples of virtually every medium. Important early works such as James Needham's Chicago River (est. $12,000-$18,000) and Isaac Hathaway's Bust of Frederick Douglass (est. $5,000-$7,000) lead the way. Two important historical portraits of Countee Cullen and Kelly Miller by Bernard Goss (est. $5,000-$7,000) are being offered. An important oil by Palmer Hayden of a woman cooking (est. $35,000-$45,000) is a rare offering. Two sculptures by Sargent Johnson from the Melvin Holmes Collection will be sold; a diorite animal figure (est. $5,000-$7,000) and a mother and child made from Oaxacan clay (est. $15,000-$20,000).
