Sollo Rago Modern Auction (Day One)

Property from Sculpted by Paul Evans: the Dorsey Reading Collection, right-hand to the artist-designer and foremost collector of his work. Over 40 of the best of these works will be auctioned on April 12th, Among the highlights: a sculpture-front vertical cabinet with 23k gold edging; a Pinwheel Argente sculpture; a Wavy-front cabinet; a Sculpture front horizontal cabinet with four doors; and a Loop screen,. Masterworks from the will sale featured in room vignettes by Alexander Gorlin, Amy Lau, Juan Montoya, Steven Sclaroff, Matthew Patrick Smyth and Alison Spear. Some of the furniture from which they will choose from is by their mid-century predecessors - designers such as Tommi Parzinger, Paul Laszlo, Maison Jansen, James Mont, Tony Duquette, and Billy Haines. Also for sale are exceptional examples of European and American design including such iconic works as the Spine chair by Andre Dubrieul, a pair of Chieftain chairs by Scandinavian master Finn Juhl, a rare set of six Hans Wegner Peacock chairs as well as works by Marc Newson, Ettore Sottsass, and Art Deco master Jean Dunand. Among the other highlights include a 1963 sculpted oak lounge chair - an early masterpiece by Wendell Castle, several pieces by Wharton Esherick, among them an iconic set of library stairs in cherry. The work of George Nakashima is represented with a spectacular Minguren I coffee table with English oak burl. Sollo Rago leads the field in glass and ceramics. Foremost is the Daniel Jacobs and Derek Mason ceramics collection, featuring ceramics created from the early 1970s on, the collection features exceptional examples by Ralph Bacerra, Howard Kottler, Jun Kaneko and Viola Frey. April's sale also features the best selection of American glass to date including extensive offerings of Dale Chihuly's work including two large Macchias a three-piece Seaform set and a Venetian sculpture.
