Hill Auction Gallery invites you to a special curated sale honoring the founder and artists of the Indian River School of painting, and its important associated movement, The Florida Highwaymen. The Indian River School, founded by Florida born artist Albert Ernest "Beanie" Backus (1906-1990), produced vivid landscapes that capture the Sunshine State's natural beauty. Their work features open skies with prominent clouds, hibiscus and other tropical flora, capturing beaches and rivers, and the Everglades' spectacular vistas. Backus influenced other Mid 20th Century artists, some of whose works are also proudly featured in this auction. Among these are the historic Florida Highwaymen, a fraternity of African American artists who created and sold landscape paintings in Florida during the 1950s and 1960s. Unrepresented by traditional galleries during the Jim Crow era, the artists traveled highways and towns across Florida, selling their work from the trunks of cars and going door-to-door to homes and businesses. Highwayman artists including Alfred Hair, Harold and Sam Newton, Livingston Roberts, and James Gibson captured the natural beauty of Florida's beaches, wetlands, rivers and skies-scenes that today only exist on the canvas and Masonite board on which they were captured in oil paint, making these artworks a valuable part of both the natural and historical record. Inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 2004, The Florida Highwaymen and their art capture an important bygone era of Florida's and America's history. We invite you to experience and enjoy their works and those of their fellow Florida artists.
