Scottish Paintings & Sculpture

This Winter Lyon & Turnbull are pleased to present a larger than usual Scottish Paintings & Sculpture auction, featuring fine examples of artwork which span the centuries. The auction commences with the finest collection of pictures by Sir William Russell Flint to be seen on the market in years. Well loved for his exquisite watercolour technique, this represents an opportunity to purchase a work of the artist’s highest standard. The sale has a strong traditional offering and features excellent examples of Romantic landscape by names including Alfred de Breanski and Louis Bosworth Hurt, not to mention a museum-quality view of Edinburgh by the original master of the genre, Alexander Nasmyth. The Kirkcudbright School and Glasgow Boys also feature, as do more contemporary favourites including Joan Eardley, who is represented by an sensitive and unusually large-scale pastel of a young boy. No Scottish Sale would be complete without a Colourist or two, and Lyon & Turnbull are pleased to present a sophisticated portrait by S. J. Peploe from his Edinburgh period of the 1910s. Collectors might also recognise F.C.B. Cadell’s wonderfully dashing Portrait of a Man in Black, which was featured in the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art’s retrospective of the artist. Completely fresh to market, the portrait belonged to Cadell’s friends and fellow artists, Huntingdon and Macdonald, whose collection we are pleased to present here for sale.
