Shaving Mugs and Scientific Medical Antiques
Cowan's remains the leading fine art auction house selling occupational decorated shaving mugs and barbershop collectibles. Cowan's set records for the extensive Henry Tolman collection in 2008, and now offers the William and Phyllis Gilmore grouping of Lancaster , Ohio , consisting of approximately 200 occupational shaving mugs. Within the collection is a wide selection representing various trades, including medical, house painters, railroad workers, barbers and more. Some highlights include an unusual doctor's mug with full hand-painted skeleton, and a tug boat captain's shaving mug.
During Session II, Cowan's Auctions will be offering a collection of medical antiques and collectibles, the cornerstone of which comes from a broad Collection in Portage, Ohio . The collector's tastes were wide-ranging, from leech jars, to surgical kits, dental keys, apothecary jars, mortars and pestles, and more. The collection is supplemented by additional consignments from a local Cincinnati art institution. Some highlights include identified Ohio surgical kits, bleeders, leech jars and other medical rarities. A number of scientific instruments and collectibles will also be represented, including a grouping of microscopes, pleximeters, and electrical devices. The collection consists of over 250 individual and group lots.
