Traditional Furnishings & Old Masters Auction
Nearly 300 lots of fine furniture, decorations and works of fine art will be offered in this specialty auction of Traditional Furnishings and Old Masters. Featured is the property of Arthur Thomson, an inveterate San Francisco collector of English and French paintings, furniture and decorations. A top highlight is "A Curious Herbal," the complete two-volume set of 500 hand-colored engravings of medicinal plants by Elizabeth Blackwell (British, 1707-1758). Created by an extraordinary woman, "A Curious Herbal" was an enormous success in its day; the set in our March 19 sale, never before offered at auction, is estimated at $8,000-$12,000. Mary Beale (British, 1632-1697) one of very few female portrait painters in 17th Century London, is another featured artist in this sale. Her splendid portrait of Hon. Anne Howard, Countess of Carlisle, is estimated at $6,000-$8,000. Also offered is "Countess Margaret Spencer" by John Hoppner (British, 1758-1810), a marvelous piece of history estimated at $5,000-$7,000. No Old Masters collection would be complete without at least one view of Venice, and Michaan's offers two fine examples in this sale: "Venice Canal" by Rafael Senet y Perez (1856-1926) and "A Venetian Backwater" (1849-1889). The large group of Old Masters prints includes works by Rembrandt, Jan Luyken, Cornelis Cortis and Andrea Mantegna.
Fine early American furniture from the estate of Arthur Thomson includes the Federal secretary desk, circa 1800, with tambour doors concealing small drawers and niches ($4,000-$6,000). The handsome 5-drawer 18th Century William and Mary burl mulberry dresser is estimated at $2,000-$3,000. Upholstered furniture and fine handmade carpets are offered.
The selection of chandeliers, sconces and mirrors includes the Napoleon III carved giltwood pier mirror, a rare find measuring nearly 11' tall x 6' wide. Treasures for the collector's 'cabinet of curiosities' include Sèvres porcelain, delightful miniatures and cloisonné, silver, rock crystal and cut glass. Estimates for auction lots of fine furniture and decorations range from $500 to $15,000.
