In the 3rd Auction from the George Raum Collection we are featuring 19th century original photographs from albums collected and compiled in the early 1880s by artist George Edward Raum (1846 - 1935) These were the basis for his book "A Tour around the World" published in 1895. George E. Raum was not a photographer and purchased his photographs from the most prominent photographers of the day during a world tour. He notes under the title of the book: 'Being a brief sketch of the most interesting sights seen in Europe, Africa, Asia, and America, while on a two years' ramble'. This group of 50 photographs encompasses a few of the countries visited. The photographs have been removed from the album. Known as an Egyptologist, George Raum painted and donated 'The Sphinx', to the Smithsonian American Art Museum in 1896. A reprint of his book is available from the British Library, Historical Print Editions.
