European Furniture, Decorations and Fine Art
The Fine European Furniture, Decorations and Fine Art auction showcases a variety of fine French decorative arts from the Renaissance to the late 19th century, Continental ceramics, Italian Baroque and later painted furniture, Maison Jansen-designed furniture from the Collection of Margaret Biddle, a selection of Roman Antiquities and a variety of marble busts.
Highlights in the large French section feature a group of signed Louis XVI furniture, including pieces by Jean-Baptiste Sené, Henri Jacob, Canabas, and a desk chair attributed to Roentgen. Accompanying this group are a selection of ormolu table top decorations, including brule parfums, chenets and mantle clocks. Other Continental works include Italian lacca povera and scagliola pieces, and later Charles X and Biedermeier furniture. We are pleased to feature a large group of fine Continental porcelain including a Du Paquier Equelle and Cover, an Early Meissen tankard, and a selection of Nuremberg chargers.
The small antiquities section is highlighted by a magnificent Late Roman micro-mosaic panel, now mounted as a low table, a pair of Italian carved marble trapezophoroi, a Roman marble torso, and a Roman architectural fragment. A fine selection of later marble busts and bronzes are complemented by a massive pair of Swedish porphyry urns. Highlights in the Fine Art section include a large still life painting by Guillaume Romain Fouace, a pair of still lifes by Raoul Macherat de Longpré, French 19thcentury portraits, and two striking Continental portraits, one of a Spanish nun and the other said to be of a prostitute.
