On Thursday, May 12 at 10:30 a.m. Eastern Time, Swann Galleries will conduct sale 2043, an auction of Autographs. The sale is rich in Americana, including colonial items, Signers, Revolutionary War, Civil War, Presidents, statesmen and western material. Of special note is an extensive archive of material relating to the Mexican War service of Captain Raphael C. Smead, an artillery officer, including letters and diaries, a daguerreotype portrait, his dress uniform jacket with epaulets and more, which together provide a rare, first-person account of the battles of Palo Alto, Monterey and Vera Cruz.
