Fine Black and White Photographica_XXIV
The inaugural auction for 2022, "Fine Black and White Photographica_XXIV", introduces a rare combined Lot featuring a profile of Abraham Lincoln by Alexander Hesler-but more importantly-the most immaculate contemporary restoration of the first known photograph of First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln, by Nicolas H. Shepherd; both available as dye based photolithographs. Our mission for the year shall persist in bringing by-gone works from early black & white photographers; such as the forgotten C.M. Bell of Washington D.C. with his featured 'Little Dog and Family, a never before seen portrait of a three member Native American family. A novelty Lot is included of a 1920's brick wall advertisement painting by the Dewars Whiskey company, plus a 1920 excerpt from the German expressionist, silent film 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari'.
The enigmatic 1878 Paris World's Fair award winning photographer Fitz W. Guerin of NY is represented in an example of his trademark figurative nude in a mirror. An essay of photographs showcasing the architecture & transport systems of London, England plus a triptych by Herman Heyn of the distinguished Sioux male known as 'Sunflower' offer a note of how several early, modern and contemporary photographers have worked diligently in multiples. 2022 will remain committed to representing the finest in portraiture, not only of the proud, indigenous peoples-but also the growing genre of African Americana, such as Albert Pollack's two member family titled 'Buffalo Soldier; Infantry Sargent with Young Girl', plus an unknown source for the 1857 picture 'African American soldier guarding Napoleon Canons'.
