The Post War and Contemporary Art auction is compromised of 127 lot of paintings, sculptures, works on paper and photographs including extraordinary examples by Ed Clark, John Craxton, Wadsworth Jarrell, Gertrude Abercombie, Roger Brown, Jim Nutt, Karl Wirsum, Jean Dubuffet, Roberto Matta, Thomas Ruff, Stanley Whitney, Larry Poons, Jules Olitski, Alexander Calder, George Rickey, William Turnbull and Harry Bertoia amongst others. Following the record setting result for the Gertrude Abercrombie, four more equally compelling surrealist paintings by the artist will be offered including a small work that was originally gifted to jazz icon Dizzy Gillespie. Another market pacing offering of Chicago Imagist material is headlined by deaccessions from the Roger Brown Study Center, once part of Roger’s personal collection, being sold to Support the School of the Art Institute of Chicago Scholarship Fund. Also of note are deaccessions from the wareHOUSE collection in Atlanta and another in demand grouping of Post War art from the Collections of Webster University in St. Louis, being sold to Benefit the Student Experience. Property from the Trust of Carmen S. Holeman, Indianapolis, anchored by the sale’s cover lot, John Craxton’s Still Life with Three Sailors, rounds out the stellar auction with strong examples of inventive figuration a harmonizing balance to the Ed Clark led presentation of exemplary abstraction in the auction. As well worthy of special attention is a Christo preparatory drawing Valley Curtain |Project for Colorado| Grand Hoeback, 7 miles North from Rifle, 1972 that was gifted by the artist to his engineering collaborated to commemorate the completion of their first of many projects, this year marks the 50th Anniversity of the majestic Vallery Curtain Project.
