Sir Charles Stewart Addis Art Collection
This November, Charlottes Auctions is honored to present a phenomenal collection of Sir Charles Stewart Addis, KCMG.
Charles Stewart Addis KCMG joined the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation in London in 1880. When he was posted to Peking, he became one of the first Western bankers to live in Beijing, China in 1886. After he was appointed senior manager of HSBC's London office in 1911. He issued a restructuring loan to Yuan Shikai's Republican government, which was a success in 1913. In that year, the British government awarded Addis a knighthood of merit.
Charles Stewart Addis was very passionate about Chinese art. During his time in Beijing, the State Council Secretary's Office of the Nationalist Government gave and sold art to him on several occasions as gifts to friends.
In 1921, he was awarded the KCMG (Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George). Later, he passed away on December 14, 1945 in Frant, Sussex.
The collection of Sir Charles Stewart Addis was inherited by his son, Sir John Addis. This collection was provided by collectors from around the world. Part of the old Sir John Addis Collection comes with the Charles Stewart Addis Collection label.
