The Collection of Bernice Rose
Art historian and curator Bernice Rose (1935-2023) was a champion of works on paper throughout her career, challenging the stigma that drawing lacked the gravitas of painting and sculpture. Her commitment and pursuit of the medium in its many iterations, revealed the seminal importance of drawing and works on paper to an artist?s practice. Through her influential curatorial work and scholarship, Rose elevated drawing and works on paper beyond the limitations of a preparatory exercise. Her definitive exhibition, Drawing Now: 1955-1975, shown at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1976, presented the work of forty-five artists as diverse as Eva Hesse, Claes Oldenburg, Michael Heizer, Roy Lichtenstein, Jim Dine, Bruce Nauman, Agnes Martin, David Hockney, Ellsworth Kelly, and Sol LeWitt. The landmark exhibition exemplified Rose?s curatorial work and extraordinary connoisseurship, and in Rose?s words from the exhibition catalogue, presented drawing as ?a major and independent medium with distinctive expressive possibilities altogether its own.? The Collection of Bernice Rose represents her curatorial eye and modern sensibility, combining works on paper by artists she knew and admired along with 20th Century Design.
The Collection of Bernice Rose reflects a lifetime of scholarly pursuit and her dedication to artists whose works on paper were an important and integral part of their artistic practice. Highlights in the collection include Sol LeWitt?s Wall Drawing #306,1977, and additional works on paper and prints by LeWitt, as well as Willem de Kooning?s Study for Clam Diggers, 1960-65, works by Fred Sandback, Claes Oldenburg, Jasper Johns, Marcel Broodthaers and Sigmar Polke. Design highlights include chairs by Mies Van der Rohe, tables by Eero Saarinen and Marcel Breuer, Danish porcelain, flatware by Georg Jensen and a group of art glass and pottery completes the collection.
