An English Fairground - J Barker Collection
An English Fairground | The John Barker Collection
This fantastic array of captivating colourful carvings represents a lifetime's passion, pieced together over fifty years by one of the country's most avid and discerning collectors of English fairground art. John Barker bought his first horse as a child whilst on a family holiday and has never looked back. His collection of predominantly carousel mounts and fairground carvings showcases some of the best work produced by the foremost craftsmen of the day, at the zenith of their production from 1870-1920, and we are honoured to present it here for sale. The collection includes significant works, important pieces in the history of the carousel and items of notable rarity and quality. The movement and expression demonstrated in the woodwork evokes the frenetic energy and excitement of the fairground, and can’t help but raise a smile from all who view them.
The lots in this sale represent the first half of the collection - probably the greatest assembled anywhere in the world - with Part II being offered later in the year alongside our Out of the Ordinary sale…
So ‘Roll Up, Roll Up, Come One, Come All’ to view the marvel that is ‘An English Fairground, The John Barker Collection’.
