ANTIQUE ORIENTAL RUGS THE MUNKACSI COLLECTION

I could not be more pleased to present Austria Auction?s fourth auction, which will be in two parts. The first will offer an exciting and interesting assortment of fine antique Caucasian, Turkish and Persian rugs; Part Two will present the Kurt Munkasci and Nancy Jeffries collection of rare and important antique Turkmen weavings. Munkasci?s collection is well known. A good number of the works have already been published but many, many more are unknown to Turkmen collectors and the marketplace. There are simply too many significant pieces in the collection for me to highlight in this introduction, so I will leave it to the catalogue descriptions and images. I must, though, mention what a great pleasure it has been to closely study and research the Munkasci collection while organising this auction. All who see this catalogue along with those who have the opportunity to view Kurt?s pieces in person at the preview will agree that the quality and breadth of this collection puts it on a par with both Dr Jon Thompson?s and Robert Pinner?s. As a long time dealer, who has handled many important Turkmen weavings, I believe appreciation for them is really only beginning and in the coming years and decades more and more attention will be focused on this genre of oriental carpets. Time will tell if I am right or wrong, but one thing is certain: over the past half century the Turkmen weavers? art has come a long way and no longer are these wondrous weavings relegated to the periphery of oriental carpet collecting, research and appreciation.
