American Furniture & Decorative Arts

The April 27 auction showcases American furniture and decorative arts from the colonial period through the Federal and Classical styles to the Revival styles of the 19th century. Silver, ceramics, weathervanes, needlework, quilts and rugs will also be offered. Complementing the furniture and decorations will be Folk paintings and historical and decorative prints. Highlighting the furniture is an impressive Renaissance Revival rosewood cabinet, circa 1870, attributed to the New York firm of Herter Brothers. Also featured are a set of four late 18th century New York Chippendale mahogany chairs including one labeled Nicholas Quackenbush, and a selection of Federal and Classical furniture from style centers of New York and Boston. Among the decorations are an elaborate sterling silver punch set by Black, Starr & Frost that was presented to New York State Justice John P. Cohlan in 1909 by the Samoset Tammany Club; an album quilt made in 1868 by the First Society of Spiritualists in Willimantic, Connecticut; and two early 19th century silk needlework pictures. American prints feature works by Currier & Ives, and the Folk Art section of the sale offers a group of theorem paintings, including an unusually large example showing a flower-filled urn.
