March Modern Auction Weekend

A catalogue of important pieces of modern design spanning the 20th Century.
Works by George Nakashima, include three Minguren pieces from the original owner; side tables, including one in rare rosewood; a Long Chair appearing for the first time at auction; and a fine, custom designed pedestal/table accompanied by Nakashima's original drawing for the piece.
Excellent examples of mid-century modern design include a George Nelson Coconut chair and a Marshmallow sofa upholstered in vintage Alexander Girard fabric, work by Charles and Ray Eames and Edward Wormley for Dunbar, Deco metal and numerous pieces of modern ceramics by Natzler, Beatrice Wood and Toshiko Takaezu. Also included will be an exceptional collection of Funk Pottery by Richard Shaw, Clayton Bailey, Robert Hudson, Howard Kottler and others.
From the estate of a longtime Knoll executive come several rare and unusual Knoll pieces and a number of early Harry Bertoia sculptures, including a steel and bronze floor sculpture from the Knoll showroom in New York City, two outdoor balancing sculptures and several wire and metal hanging sculptures. Of equal importance are an amazing offering of historically important drawings and blueprints for Isamu Noguchi designs, including his Rocking Stool and a sculptured table designed for Knoll that never went into production.
The Art Deco furniture in the auction includes pieces by Gilbert Rohde, all purchased from the estate of the original owner who acquired the items in 1936. Impressive Vladimir Kagan designs from his "organic era" will be offered: a fine collection of cherry furniture and a rare "Cloud" sofa among them. A strong selection of modern lighting features Maria Pergay and early French lighting along with Arteluce and Arredoluce floor lamps. American chrome from Howell, Lloyd and Troy Sunshade Company and the work of Gio Ponti and James Mont add to the eclectic flavor of the auction.
Sunday will feature work by Shizuhiko Watanabe, a student of George Nakashima and an instructor at the Parsons School of Design. Also featured on Sunday will be a collection of Chase metal, more Deco by Rohde, Wolfgang Hoffmann and designs by Eames and Nelson along with many pieces of pottery, glass and Scandinavian furniture by a wide range of designers.
