Passion for Fashion

Session 1: 11am, lots 1 to 220 Session 2: 3pm, lots 221 to end of sale We have garments relating to Queen Victoria, Edward VII, Edward VIII (as Duke of Windsor), haute couture from Lucile of Hanover Square, and 1930s Schiaparelli from her London and Paris salons. For men we have groovy pieces from Biba, Granny Takes a Trip and Mr Freedom. But the two major and historically important collections in this auction come from Celia Birtwell and Jordan. The highly important Celia Birtwell collection (lots 153 to 211) chart her life in fashion, her collaborations with Ossie Clark as well as including special one-off pieces Ossie made just for her. Celia was not only a muse to her then husband Ossie Clark, but also to close friend David Hockney. Celia was sketched and painted by Hockney numerous times wearing many of the clothes included in this auction. Most famous of all is his iconic double portrait 'Mr & Mrs Clark & Percy' where she wears 'Heavenly Twins', the black and scarlet moss crepe dress (lot 165). The collection of Jordan (Pamela Rooke) the 'high priestess of Punk', lots 221 to 237, charts her time spent working with Westwood and McLaren at 430 Kings Road, 1974 -1982. Her non-compromising personal style - with spiked tinted hair, cubist face paint, wearing provocative bondage or fetish gear - made her the living embodiment of Punk, more so than even Vivienne Westwood herself. London has paid homage this year to the talent of the greatly missed Alexander McQueen with the superb Victoria & Albert Museum retrospective. Accordingly we have some incredibly rare and special McQueen pieces. Having told you that the sale is very British in feel this time, I must also stress that we also have one of the strongest and most spectacular offerings of Japanese fashion ever to come onto the market.
