Miniature Books from the Lilliput Saloon
Part I of The Rico Onuma Memorial Auction of miniature books from the Lilliput Oval Saloon of Tokyo offers 500 lots of fine miniature books spanning the Sixteenth through Twenty-first centuries. From early printed editions of Latin and Greek classics, Thumb Bibles, and Bijou Almanacs, to modern Micro-miniatures, and fine limited editions, nearly every sub-genre of the miniature book collecting is represented. Antiquarian offerings including several high-points of miniature printing such as the 1871 printing of Dante’s Divine Comedy by G. Gnocchi of Milan in the 2-point Flies-eye type, Galileo’s Letter to Madama di Lorenza printed in 1896 and for many years the smallest book printed from movable type. Also offered are large selections of miniature Almanacs, including several editions of the famed London and Bijou annuals, and many fine thumb bibles including several variants of the noted Newbery Bible of 1780. Publications of Firmin Didot, Marcilly of Paris, David Bryce, and William Pickering are also well represented among the antiquarian offerings. The modern miniatures include works from many of the Twentieth-centuries best-known printers and publishers of miniature editions including the Alembic Press, the Ampersand Workshop, Ash Ranch Press, Black Cat Press, Anne & David Bromer, the Catharijne Press, Joseph D’Ambrosio, Dawson’s Book Shop, Roger Huet, Juniper von Phitzer Press, Little Farm Press, Poole Press, Rebecca Press, Silver Thimble Books, Achille J.
