The upper segment with a central portrayal of the German emperor, flanked by seven prince-electors, the lower segment depicting eight German dukes, each of them holding a shield emblazoned with the coat of arms of their state in their hands. Flat hinged lid with lion finial. Ball thumbrest, the shoulder of the handle with Vienna master mark and "W". Band handle with fine relief décor, portrayal of Leda and the Swan between scrolling foliage. Base rosette with crossed arrows and "H.S.". Height 49 cm.In the first quarter of the 17th century, there were two Vienna-based masters with the initials "H.S.": Hanns Sichart (Hintze, volume 7, no. 1490) and Hanns Schuerz (Hintze, volume 7, no. 1498). Both could be the maker of this jug.The number of prince-electors increased to eight in 1623, when the Bavarian dukes were raised to prince-electors. As the engraving only shows seven prince-electors, the jug must have been made before that date.Condition: II +
