Description
Seated three-quarter length albumen oval carte de visite (CDV) of J.E.B. Stuart. London: Alexander Bassano. [Florida]: S.C. McIntyre. McIntyre's publisher imprint and copyright notice printed in negative with title "Genl. J.E.B. Stuart. C.S.A." Bassano's imprint to mount recto and verso.
Scarce carte de visite photograph featuring legendary Confederate cavalryman, J.E.B. Stuart. This particular image is taken from an albumen print of the General, arguably the most famous image of Stuart, and was likely made after his death at the Battle of Yellow Tavern in 1864.
Interestingly, the verso bears the backmark of a London photographer, which demonstrates contemporary interest in the American Civil War across the Atlantic Ocean.
Stuart rose to fame after a much-publicized ride around Union General McClellan’s entire army in 1862. His flamboyant cavalier image made him a star both in the Confederacy and beyond.
