Description
This is a superb large map of New England with a large inset map of Eastern Portion of Massachusetts and a table of distances. The map features Johnson's distinctive indexing system. Here the map is divided into 282 grids that is identical to the system used by today's Thomas Guides and other contemporary companies. Plenty of detail is offered as to topography, lakes, rivers, railroads, towns, citieies, etc. The map is printed on thin banknote style paper and folds into gilt-stamped cloth covers. The information presented on the inside cover promotes Johnson's map and his unique system of indexing with an explanation to its use. The map was drawn, engraved and printed by G.W. & C.B. Colton. This folding map is presented in original gilt stamped cloth case along with a 25 page index booklet. Copyright date printed on map is 1882. This is a seldom seen item - only two were seen at auctions and one dealer sale is referenced in the past 30 years.

Condition
Good. Nice print on thin, banknote paper folding into original gilt stamped cloth case. A number of fold splits. The separate index section is detached from the case. Colored.
