1767 HUNTING The Chase Somervile Horses Sports Hobbinol Rural Games English RARE
William Somervile was an English poet who is best remembered for his 1735 epic poem The Chase. Like the original georgic poem by Virgil, Somervile wrote his georgic The Chase in a manner than helped originate and establish the style used in the English georgic.
In this poem, Somervile describes aspects of hunting in medieval and Renaissance England, management and care of hounds, fox, and hare hunting, as well as otter trapping and hunting. This 1767 printing is notable for including Somerviles burlesque poem Hobbinol – a humorous poem of king and queen Hobbinol and Ganderetta their rural May Games.
