History

The French speakers called bookends ""books support"". Bookends didn’t come into use until medieval days, not until bookshelf come into use in the 15th & 16th century, as libraries became crowded and more and more books were in print. By late sixteenth century it was customary to see shelving with books stacked horizontally. Over time this became dangerous and hard to manage. Some folks started turning them vertically but is was still well after the Renaissance period before bookends started appearing. Propping of books were not the main objective anymore, they started becoming a part of the style or décor of the room. Some would stay it was a luxury to have bookends and still today some bookends do provide a sense of prestige. However there are so many styles, materials and the same with books, you can create any look, just by adding a certain kind, color, size of book to coordinate with your favorite bookends. Prices today run from $29 for new ones and up to $1000’s for vintage and antique ones.
