Description
A massive example made for an exceptionally large and high-ranking officer, showing distinct Mughal influence in the fine, heavily gilded persiform hilt with bud quillon terminals and profiled langets, embellished with naturalistic vegetal engraving. The leather-covered wooden scabbard showing a fusion of Indian and English influence, with large gilt and engraved mounts decorated with naturalistic vegetal work en suite with the hilt, each mount with pierced oval showing deep blue velvet beneath, and retaining its original leather sling. The blade likewise of English form, exceptionally long and broad with shallow curvature, and handwrought, with broad spine and deep central fuller and raised, chamfered edge and spear tip, designed as both a cut and thrust weapon. 18th- early 19th century. Some wear to gilding, leather rubbed, blade with minor pitting. Overall length 103.5 cm /40 3/4". Condition III
