Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $400**

Pre-Columbian, Guatemala / Belize, Maya, Classic Period, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A trio of curiously shaped chert flints fittingly known as "eccentric flints" in abstracted forms that sometimes resemble zoomorphs or geometric shapes that are unsuitable for use as tools or weapons but valued for their interesting designs! These served a sacrificial and ceremonial purpose and are often found as offerings in caches inside of stone monuments and other architectural features. The flints were shaped by flaking the chert stone surface with a harder stone and took great skill to make - the doubled winged one may symbolize a bat or butterfly. Size of butterfly flint: 2.25" L x 1.75" W (5.7 cm x 4.4 cm)

Provenance: private British Columbia, Canada collection, gifted from aunt in Tucson, Arizona, USA, acquired prior to 1994
