Native American, Northwestern United States / Canada, Tlingit, Haida, or Kwakwaka'wakw culture, ca. late 20th century CE. A fine hand-sewn regalia or dance collar made from the classic red and black wool felt with fine beading and buttons. The front panel has a bib-like shape with a neckband and velcro closure, and the verso is lined with blue cotton. The central motif is a wolf or other formline canine, the red felt opencut to reveal the black below. The animal is a crest figure or symbol that probably denotes clan or family affiliation, which was worn as part of ceremonial regalia during potlatches and other events in many Pacific Northwest cultures. Robes, chilkats, and ceremonial capes were traditionally worn by Northwestern tribes to denote rank and clans, and before European contact, theses were usually made from hide, woven cedar bark, or even dog hair. In the 19th century the Hudson Bay Company traded many wool blankets with the coastal tribes and these plain blankets were transformed into the ceremonial and dancing regalia with the addition of buttons, appliques, beads, and emblems of family or clan affiliation.
