Description
A Russian Imperial Porcelain Manufactory Platter from the Old Style Armorial Service Russian Imperial Porcelain Manufactory, St. Petersburg, Period of Nicholas I (1825-1855) 13-7/8 x 18-3/4 x 2-5/8 inches (35.2 x 47.6 x 6.7 cm) This service, with two thin gold bands, the rim centering the lesser state arms of the Russian Empire is from the period of Nicholas I in which the Emperor introduced raised wings of the double-headed eagle. Still, the wings were not particularly florid, and so when Alexander II and III and Nicholas II began using the "new" arms with the wings broadly displayed, this service, largely used in the Winter Palace, became known as the "Old Style" service, and was used together with the Coronation or Winter Palace services, which were similar. For more information on this service, see Iz Serviznykh Kladovykh: Ubranstvo russkogo imperatorskogo stolaXVIII - Nachala XX Veka, State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, 2016, p. 380.
