Antique Victorian coin purse, 1880s-90s. The top is a silver-plated metal repousse plaquette with helmeted head of Roma, a classic motif on the Roman coins of the Republic period. Inside is a genuine polished bone insert with a faded text. "Manchester Bank, the City of Manchester," 'present' and the name of the NY Company, apparently the customer of this bank.

The city of Manchester, Virginia, founded in the 1840s, was an independent city until 1910, then it was incorporated into larger Richmond.

The metal plaque is c.2.1/8" x 1.1/2" [5.2cm x 4.9cm]; the leather purse is c. 2.1/2" x 2.1/2" [5.4cm]; some aging and patina, the antique leather is surprisingly well preserved, very good condition.
