Historical Background
After receiving an advance of $2.5 million, recently resigned President Richard Nixon began working on an autobiography. In 1977, Warner sold hardcover rights and ceded editorial control to Grosset & Dunlap. Finally released in May 1978, RN: The Memoirs of Richard Nixon became a bestseller, despite the efforts of some protestors to boycott the book because they believed it profited from the Watergate scandal. Grosset & Dunlap also issued a full leatherbound edition, limited to 2,500 copies, and a paperback version appeared in 1979.

Richard M. Nixon (1913-1994) was born in California, graduated from Whittier College in 1934, and was third in his class at Duke University School of Law in 1937. He gained admission to the California bar and practiced law for five years before moving to Washington to take a position in the Office of Price Administration. He joined the U.S. Naval Reserve in June 1942 and, after initial service in Iowa, transferred to the Pacific as a logistics officer. After the war, Nixon won election to Congress from California and served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1947 to 1950 and in the U.S. Senate from 1950 to 1953, when he became Vice President of the United States under President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Nixon was the Republican candidate for the Presidency in 1960 but narrowly lost the election to Democrat John F. Kennedy. After failing to unseat the incumbent Democratic governor of California in 1962, Nixon moved to New York City and practiced law. In 1968, he won the Republican nomination for the Presidency and won the general election over Democratic candidate Humbert Humphrey and American Independent candidate George Wallace. During his Presidency, Nixon opened relations with China, withdrew American troops from Vietnam, and reached nuclear limitation agreements with the Soviet Union. After his landslide re-election over Democrat George McGovern in 1972, the Watergate scandal regarding a break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington led to accusations against Nixon. Under imminent threat of impeachment and removal from office, Nixon resigned from the Presidency on August 9, 1974. A month later, new President Gerald Ford granted Nixon a pardon. Nixon published his memoirs in 1978 and ultimately became an elder statesman, especially on foreign affairs.
