Bret Harte began his writing career as a journalist, poet, and short story writer in California, documenting the facts and fictions of the gold rush days. His reputation as a leading nineteenth century American man of letters was firmly established by the publication of his immensely successful collection, The Luck of Roaring Camp and Other Sketches (1870).
