Description
An antique mourning ring for Antony Lybbe, c. 1674, of 'D' section profile, with skull detailing to the outer surfaces, worn and indistinct, the reverse engraved 'Anth. Lybbe Ar: Obijt 24th Sept 1674'. Maker's mark W, 5.86g Ring size N Antony Lybbe was born in 1607 as the second son to Richard Lybbe, high sheriff of Oxon. In 1637, he married Mary Keate, the daughter and heir of Leonard Keate of Checkendon. She bore him 13 children and lived until 1692; she was buried in Whitchurch. In 1646 the Committee of the county of Berkshire sequestered the estate of Antony Lybbe, after receiving information that he was suspected of being in Armes against the Parliament. He was finally discharged in 1652 upon motion of Mr Blagrave, at Haberdashers’ Hall, London. He was a J.P. He died in 1674. As inscribed to an etched slate on the Whitchurch floor, he died in the 26th year of King Charles II reign. He left no will, so his widow took out Letters of Administration. Condition Report: The light engraving on the outer surface of the band matches the shape of a very worn skull detailing. The band may have been restored at some point.
