"Campfires & Battlefields is remarkable for its fascinating detail. It describes many battles in depth from the perspective of only about 20 years after the events. It reads as if written by an observer, not by a historian. It is beautifully illustrated... If I could only have one book about the Civil War, this would be my choice." [a private review]

"The largest, clearest and most valuable pictorial history of the Civil War published in one volume, reproduced exactly as the sought after and long out of print original edition. There are over 1000 illustrations of every possible kind imaginable: battle scenes...cartoons...songs of the Confederacy...songs of the Federalists...Brady photographs...maps...facsimiles...[from a review]

Rossiter Johnson (1840-1931) was an American author and editor. He edited several encyclopedias, dictionaries, and books, and was one of the first editors to publish "pocket" editions of the classics. He was also an author of histories, novels, and poetry. Among his best-known works was Phaeton Rogers, a novel of boyhood in Rochester, New York, where Johnson was born. Johnson received his early education in common schools, and graduated from the University of Rochester in 1863. He later received the honorary degrees of Ph.D. and LL.D. from the University of Rochester.
