  • Description:Molly “Spotted Elk“ Penobscot Dancer Autograph, Picture, and Travel Diary Leather Bound Booklet c. June-December, 1927, Ottawa, Canada. This fascinating piece of history is an amalgamation of Molly’s travels in late 1927, including photos of the people she met, descriptions of her travels, several poems, songs, and many personal notes she received from friends and admirers along the way. Perhaps the most fascinating inclusion in this booklet is a check dated June 11, 1927 from a Mr. Will J. McLaughlin for an incredible sum of $75,000.40; when adjusted for inflation of the Canadian Dollar from 1927 to 2024, it is equivalent to $1,313,602.94 Canadian present-day. The check is adorned with a black and white photo of Mr. McLaughlin, of whom Spotted Elk’s relation to/with is uncertain. Many of the personal letters included in the booklet detail Molly’s beautiful dancing, and are convey a sense of both admiration as well as adoration. The beautiful calligraphy, heart-felt sentimentality, and undeniable appreciation of her admirers is heart-touching but also of historical significance- in the early 1900’s Native American’s were still oftentimes discriminated against and the letters in this book show portray an individual who was able to break through this archaic barrier of society and gain respect from many people of many nationalities, religions, ethnicities, and cultures.
