Major Frederick Silvey , S-3 with the 320th GFAB, landed by glider at around 4.06 am on 6 June 1944, in an orchard near the main road to Sainte-Mere-Eglise. For gallantry in action on 11 June 1944, in Normandy, while his battalion was supporting an infantry counter-attack, Major Frederick Silvey , went forward with the riflemen to ensure that the close artillery fire was under control. He moved under intense small arms, mortar and artillery fire, with complete disregard for his own safety. This example helped to maintain the momentum of the attack. Major Silvey s aggression, courage and calm in the face of danger were in keeping with the highest traditions of the airborne forces. The bag was recovered directly from the veteran s estate in the USA, along with all his other personal military effects, including his M1 helmet, A-2 and M-41 jackets, unit flag, dog tags, etc. Attached is a photocopy of a photo of the Major in his A-2 jacket.
