Description
[NAVAL CHRONOMETER]. Eight-Day Boxed Ship’s Chronometer. London: Kelvin & James White, Ltd. & Hutton, [ca. 1860s]. This exceptional artifact was manufactured by the British firm Kelvin & James White Ltd., & Hutton in the early 1860’s. Eight-day marine chronometers are very rare, as the great majority of such pieces were made to run for 48 to 56 hours only. The chronometer, numbered 5063, has solid gold hour and minute hands and the original double lid mahogany box. This box is itself a masterpiece of construction with recessed handles and hinge fittings, and retains all of the original varnish while the gimbals have developed a rich golden yellow patina. The case is 8” square and 8 ½” deep; the chronometer face is 6” in diameter. It runs perfectly, as a fine British chronometer should. A superb timepiece.
