Description
Pierre-Auguste Renoir (French, 1841-1919): Pierre-Auguste Renoir: Sur la plage, a Berneval, ca. 1892. 4 3/4 x 3 inches. Framed Etching on paper. Excellent Provenance: Property from the Collection of Rhoda H. Clark and The Monastery Hill Bindery, Hindman Auctions, Jessica Leigh Collection, Bedford Art Collection Brooklyn, New York. Auguste Renoir, born in Limoges, France, emerged as a luminary of the Impressionist movement, revolutionizing art with his mastery of light and color. Initially a porcelain painter, Renoir's artistic journey flourished under Charles Gleyre's guidance in Paris, where he mingled with luminaries like Monet and Sisley, igniting the flame of Impressionism. Sketching alongside Monet on the Seine, Renoir embraced lighter tones, signaling a stylistic metamorphosis. His travels across Europe infused his palette with influences ranging from Raphael's classical grandeur to Rubens' vibrant hues. During the second half of the nineteenth century, France witnessed a printmaking Renaissance. Despite the prevailing trend, Impressionists were initially hesitant to adopt the medium. However, Renoir proved to be a pioneer, quickly mastering printmaking. Despite being an established painter, he executed a total of 59 prints in his lifetime, including etchings and lithographs in almost equal measure. Renoir's etchings, unlike his paintings, were often commissioned for specific projects, serving as frontispieces or illustrations for books. Remarkably, he developed a distinct style in etching that evolved independently of his painting career, showcasing his versatility and innovation as an artist. Examples of this print Sur la Plage are in the Metropolitan Museum Collection, The Detroit Institute of Art and several other notable collections.
