According to the Winchester Serialization Chart, this Model 70 XTR Magnum (XTR= Extra Care & Quality) was produced in 1980. SPECS: Glossed walnut Monte Carlo stock with deep cut checkering/ high fluted comb & raised cheek, black forearm cap with white spacer, black grip cap with white spacer, high luster bluing, jeweled bolt, black rubber buttpad with black/ white spacers, high ramped rear sight with adjustable folding leaf, hooded ramp front sight, sling studs, hinged floorplate, 3+1 internal box magazine and is drilled for scope mounts on the top of the receiver. CONDITION: This rifle is in beautiful condition no wear to speak of, has an excellent sharp/ clean bore and appears to be in good working order. HISTORY: Winchester introduced their "XTR" models in 1978. The Winchester Catalog stated -- "XTR represents an exciting new look in the Winchester line of sporting arms. All XTR rifles and shotguns present a totally new appearance - a new color, a tough high-luster finish on wood, fine cut checkering, high metal polish and deep rich bluing. Selected XTR models also feature important refinements to improve handling and performance. XTR stands for extra care and quality in the manufacture of Winchester sporting arms." During this time (1970s -1980s) Winchester was making a concerted effort to improve the quality and finish on their guns. Winchester's reputation had been hurt by the massive changes to their line in 1964. The XTR designation was the culmination of their return to prominence.
