Description
WW1 British Medal Pair Queens Royal West Surrey Regiment, British War and Victory medals, “L-10767 PTE P. SPREADBOROUGH THE QUEEN’S R.” An interesting pair of medals to a soldier who was court martialled on multiple times and on 1 occasion he was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment. Percy Spreadborough was from Leytonstone, Essex and attested for the 6th Battalion on 10th September 1914 giving his address as the Municipal Lodging House. In August 1915 he was tried by Field General Court Martial being sentenced to 6 months imprisonment with hard labour the sentence being suspended and then remitted. Later that year he was again in trouble and on 22nd November he was tried by FGCM the charge being ‘When on active service disobeying in such a manner as to show wilful defiance of authority a lawful command given personally by his superior officer in the execution of his office’. Being found guilty he was sentence to 5 years imprisonment this later being commuted to 2 years imprisonment with hard labour. Released in May 1918, he returned to duty managing to stay out of trouble (or at least not get caught!) until 12th February 1919 when he was absent for 59 hours and failed to comply with an order, sentenced to 14 days Field Punishment No.2. He was discharged on 4th September 1920. On the 1939 Register he is shown as being a resident of the Warlingham Park Mental Hospital his occupation stated as being an ex-soldier. He is also entitled to a 1914-15 Star medal.
