Description
Labacco: Appartenente a l'architettvra. Edition made in 1570 by Bolognini Zaltieri (c.1540-c.1600) after Labacco (Antonio Labacco (c. 1495- c. 1570)) Provenance: Libro d'Antonio Labacco appartenente a l'architettvra nel qval si figvrano alcvne notabili antiqvita di Roma. Production date: 1570. Size: 28,2x42,4 cm. Condition: magins are deteriorated due to age and several holes. Some hole could affect the image. Antonio Labacco was a 16th-century architect, engraver, and writer about the architecture of classical Rome. Labacco was born near Vigevano in about 1495. He was a pupil of Antonio da Sangallo the Younger in Rome.In 1558 he published an architectural treatise, entitled Libro d'Antonio Labacco appartenente a l'architettura nel qual si figurarano alcune notabili antiquita di Roma, with plates he had engraved himself. He also engraved the plans of the Basilica of St. Peter's from Sangallo's designs. He died some time after 1567. Background information: Vignola might have collaborated with Antonio Labacco who had published his Libro appartenente all’architettura “impresso a Roma, in casa nostra” already in 1552 for his Regola delli cinque ordini d’architettura published in 1562. The two books are found frequently bindes; Labacco’s representation of antique buildings and Vignola’s account of the system of the orders complement each other. But Vignola’s death in 1573 ended the project. The editorial success of the Regola generated pirated copies immediately. The pontifical privilege, also valid for Venice, was ignored there; the printer Bolognini Zaltieri published a new edition as early as 1570. It consists of exact replications of the thirty-two original plates from 1562, except that plate II, with the privilege, was replaced with an overview of the five orders freely inspired from Serlio.; Labacco: Appartenente a l'architettvra.
