BIOGRAPHY:
Ralph Hillbom was known as a Woodstock NY artist early in his career and also
painted on Monhegan Island off the Maine coast along with other Woodstock
artists such as Walter Koeniger. He settled permanently in Florida in the mid-1920s, residing in St.Augustine and then in nearby Largo.
Between the 1930s and the early 1950s the historic city of St. Augustine had a thriving cultural community which attracted hundreds of American artists. In its heyday, St. Augustine developed into the largest art colony in the South through the efforts of a small group of dedicated professional and amateur resident artists who founded the St. Augustine Arts Club in 1931. Renamed the Arts Club of St. Augustine in 1934, and St. Augustine Art Association in 1948, members elected Ralph H Hillbom its first president.
The Lightner Museum collection owns a painting by Hillbom, which is shown in their book "LOST COLONY: The Artists of Saint Augustine." His career also included employment as an illustrator for the "St. Augustine Record". After his death many of his works were handled by a Tampa Bay dealer.
