ARNOLD, Benedict (1741-1801). Receipt signed ("Benedt. Arnold"), and issued to a future member of the Connecticut Sons of Liberty. Windham [CT], 21 May [1]764.
1p, approx. 6 1/2 x 4 1/4 in. (creasing, toning, light soil). Docketed on verso.
Receipt reads in full: "Received of Captain Hugh Ledlie Thirty Seven pounds Four Shillings, lawful money by the hand of Missrs. Huntington & Webb on acct of his note."
Prior to his fame as an American Revolutionary War officer and infamous traitor, Benedict Arnold operated as a successful Colonial merchant and shipowner in Connecticut. Captain Hugh Ledlie of Windham, Connecticut, was also a prominent figure in the state. Ledlie had served as captain of the 10th Co., First Connecticut Regiment during the French and Indian War. After the war in 1764, he purchased the Arnold home in Norwich from Benedict Arnold's father. Following the Stamp Act of 1765, Ledlie would become an active member of the Connecticut Sons of Liberty alongside Arnold.
