[CIVIL WAR - EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. Indiana CDV album featuring Civil War soldiers and a campus view of Valparaiso University.

Octavo album (5 x 6 1/4 in.) containing 50 CDVs and CDV-sized tintypes of political leaders, soldiers, and civilians, many identified in the index included in the back of the album (toning and soiling to some CDVs; edge and corner wear to mounts, some trimmed; areas of surface wear to album). Several CDVs are credited to photographers from Indiana and Ohio, including M. Witt (Columbus, OH), C. Eppert (Terre Haute, IN), Husher (Terre Haute, IN), D.H. Wright (Terre Haute, IN), Tingley's Art Gallery (Greencastle, IN), Spurgin (Greencastle, IN), James Bonney (South Bend, IN), and John Cavanaugh (Williamsport, IN). The final image in the album presents a rare view of the grounds of the Valparaiso Male and Female College in Valparaiso, Indiana (verso imprint identifies the scene) (corners clipped).

The album contains 8 CDVs of Civil War soldiers and political leaders, several identified in the accompanying index. Subjects include: Abraham Lincoln. -- Ulysses S. Grant. -- Schuyler Colfax. -- William T. Sherman. -- James B. McPherson. -- Courtland Matson (identified in index), officer with 16th and 71st Indiana Infantries, 6th Indiana Cavalry, POW Atlanta, GA, 8/7/1864, confined at Macon, GA, and Columbia, SC. -- Edmund T. Spotswood (identified in index), surgeon with 71st Indiana Infantry and 6th Indiana Cavalry. -- Orlando J. Smith (identified in index), officer with 16th and 71st Indiana Infantries, 6th Indiana Cavalry, POW Athens, GA, 8/3/1864, confined at Macon, GA, and Columbia, SC.

Additional highlights include a composite view entitled The American Presidents, a lithographed view of "Old Abe," the eagle mascot of the 8th Wisconsin Infantry, and multiple artfully posed portraits of lovely young women, some identified.

Together, 50 CDVs housed in a single album, highlighted by images of identified officers who served with Indiana regiments and an early view of Valparaiso Male and Female College, which was founded in 1859.
