Biography: A Canadian/American painter, illustrator, commercial artist and educator; in Canada she was known as Elsie Julia Miller, in the USA she was known as Julia Schleicher (married name: Elsie Julia Schleicher). She was born in Ontario, Canada and lived in Toronto, Ontario until about 1954 when she moved to the USA. She lived in the environs of Belleville, New Jersey until the late 1980s and died in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was a member of several prominent art organizations such as the National Arts Club, The American Artists Professional League, and the National Association of Women Artists. Her mediums were oils, watercolors, gouache, pastels and charcoal. Her primary subjects were portraits. Her style was Realism; the askART auction results have several good illustrations of her early work. Her art education includes studies under Archibald Barns, most likely at the Ontario College of Art, Toronto where he taught from 1935 to 1952. In Canada, in addition to portraits, Miller did illustrations for the Star Weekly magazine in Toronto. In the USA, Schleicher painted portraits (Senator Strom Thurmond and his family were notable clients) and gave painting demonstrations. She was also a member of several art organizations that included the National Arts Club , The American Artists Professional League , the Montclair Artists Colony, the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club (she was Co-Chairman of the 1965 Annual), and the National Association of Women Artists with whom she exhibited frequently from 1967 to 1981. She also exhibited at the New Jersey State Show and with the Summit Art Association in New Jersey.
