Top has two parts; the larger compartment has its cover bearing an elaborate cartouche, and smoothly opens to rest beautifully on a surface and reveals a blue velvet writing mat, on the other hand, the smaller horizontal cover above the writing surface area, opens outward to cubbies for storage of various ink and writing instruments.
