UG 138SS, circa 1952-1955.

This excerpt details a limited-edition commemorative wristwatch, crafted by Universal Genève specifically for the Saudi Arabian royal family. The timepiece, targeted towards a prestigious audience, was created for King Abdulaziz Ibn Saud (1875-1953), the founder of modern Saudi Arabia, and his successor, King Saud (1902-1969).

The dial incorporates a unique aesthetic, featuring partial hour markers rendered in Arabic script. Furthermore, inscriptions honoring the king ("Saoud Ibn Abdul Aziz" at 12 o'clock) and the Arabian Peninsula ("Jezira el Arabia" at 6 o'clock) are prominently displayed. ("Jezira" translates to "island" in Arabic.)

The most striking element of the watch is the elaborate enamel scene. This vibrant portrayal depicts the Arabian Peninsula in a deep emerald hue, contrasting vividly with the realistic turquoise enamel representing the surrounding bodies of water: the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea, the Persian Gulf, and the Gulf of Aden. Enhancing the scene further, the hour markers and celebratory inscriptions are set upon a rose gold ring that encircles the enamel artwork.

Two subtle enamel motifs offer a distinct homage to Saudi Arabia. One motif showcases the nation's emblem, featuring a palm tree and crossed swords (adopted in 1950). The other motif depicts a mosque, likely one of the three highly significant historical mosques located in Medina.

Unfortunately, due to a fire that ravaged the Universal Genève factory in 1955, detailed production archives for this specific timepiece are unavailable. It is worth noting, however, that during this period, Universal Genève produced similar commemorative watches adorned with enamel dials, catering to leaders in Egypt and India.
